November Las Vegas trip, Day 1

So, I haven't been keeping up with my blog, although I have been working at a steady job since July, so there is that.  Although I hadn't been working steadily before that, so there's no excuse for not being up to date to then.

In any event, there's always time to write a Las Vegas trip report, right?

So, I had some Southwest flight credits I had to use before the end of November, so why not make a Vegas trip?  I was considering doing the Rock and Roll Marathon, well the 10k portion of it, at least, but I did my 10k in Atlantic City at the end of October, so I didn't feel the need to attempt the Las Vegas one.  Plus, I was only going for a short amount of time (4 nights), instead of my usual 7-10 days, plus another reason I was planning the trip was that I had quite a bit of free play and match play coupons to use.  I figured my EV for the trip was around $400, so the seemed to make it worthwhile.

I did manage to get some friends to make the trip with me, well meet me in Las Vegas, at least.  Bob headed out on Nov 5, with a side trip to Phoenix, and Catherine headed to LAS on Nov 7, with me finally arriving on Nov 9.

My office is less than a quarter mile walk to the Spring Hill Metro Station.  I left around 2:07 PM, and from there it was a short ride (10 minites) to the Wiehle-Reston East Metro Station, where I caught the Washington Flyer (Silver Line Express) bus to Dulles.  By 2:56 PM, I was at the airport.  Total price was around $8. ($5 for the bus, and I think $3.10 for the Metro).

With TSA Pre, the security line was a breeze, and I was at my gate in no time.  I looked over my lunch options, and went with Potbelly ($10.65).  I had a connection in ATL, and I was right next to my departure gate, and I was boarding B1.  IAD-ATL was fine, I had a couple next to me, where she spent most of the trip leaning over and watching TV on her companion's computer.  The ATL-LAS was not as good, there was a larger woman next to me, who lifted the armrest for more space.  I made the best of it, taking advantage of the free movies Southwest offers now, and caught Ant Man and the Wasp.  We had a slight weather delay out of ATL, but made up some time, and arrived at LAS around 9:38 PM, eight minutes late from our schedule arrival time.

As I only had my carry-on items, I went to passenger pickup and waited for Bob and Catherine to arrive.  They arrived around 10:11 PM, and we were on our way!

Although it was Friday (presumably busy), I said we could stop at Bellagio and catch a fountain show and perhaps see the Conservatory.  As we have Caesars Diamond cards (and it was probably the most convenient), we parked at Bally's/Paris, coming in the back way on Audrie.  We got out to Bellagio around 10:44 PM, just in time for a fountain show.

We went in and went to the Conservatory.  It was still decorated from when my friend saw them working on the change in September.

I still needed to check in at Golden Gate, Catherine was worried that my room might be cancelled, but I figured I should be okay.  Even though it was a busy weekend due to the marathon.  In any event, we dropped Catherine off at The D and arrived at Golden Gate around 12:13 AM.  I went to the front desk and the clerk took my information and looked at the computer, he had a look of concern, which I didn't like.  He got on the phone and was talking to someone, presumably the manager.  He mentioned that I had a suite reservation, they had given all of them out, there were only two rooms left, and what can he do?  He mentioned he had the penthouse suite available tonight, and after further talking with the person, he told me he would be able to put me in the penthouse tonight, but someone had it starting tomorrow, and I would need to leave that room by 11 AM.  I said sure, as long as they had another room (preferably the suite I reserved) the next day.  He said they were working on the rooms, but said I would get a suite.  I said the penthouse would be fine (as if it wouldn't).

We went up to the fifth floor (because it is Golden Gate) and saw the room listing, 1 to the left and 2 to the right.  But the room packet he gave me said, "50", and there didn't seem to be a room 50.  After going down to room 2 and the key did not work, we went back to room 1, and the key worked.

Wow, the suite was just incredible.  It was sad that I only had it for the one night, well, 10 hours.  The pictures here do not to it justice.  We spent about 30 minutes just taking photos of the room, but I still wanted to eat dinner!

So Bob and I headed to California and the Market Street Cafe, getting there around 1:32 AM.  Of course, there was a long line, but it seemed to move quickly.  Our service was pretty slow, but the food was fine.  I was thinking about a steak, but ended up getting a loco moco, because The Cal.

I used the LVA 2-1 coupon, and although it says to take it to the slot club (which was closed), the cashier let me use it.  She also took off the more expensive item ($6.99 versus $4.99) and the bill came to $5.40.  Since it was Bob's birthday, I paid, and he left the tip.

Bob wanted to check something out at Main Street Station, so we headed over there.  Since we were there, I had to play the Pay the Aces, No Faces machine.  I didn't get more than two aces, but I did hit this:

I didn't have my card in, since I wasn't expecting to play much, and the slot attendant said I needed my card in to get a scratch card.  I thought he was going to give me one when I put it in, and I think he would have if the supervisor person wasn't standing there.  In any event, I did not hit another quad (or better), and cashed out for $75 (I cashed out at 200 credits, and there was $25 in quarters from the aces I hit).  But a funny thing when I cashed the coins in at the cage.  I saw that the display at the position had a flickering tens digit.  And as the person went over to put the coins in, it was flickering on and off until it stopped at $75.  But the "7" went out, just showing $5.  When the guy came back, he looked at the display and gave me $5.  I thought he was joking, but he seemed to be serious.  I said, that it was way more than $5, and he looked at the display, and then the "7" came back on.  He laughed about it and paid me the rest of my money.  Really, did he think that a cup full of quarters only came to $5?  Apparently seven never win. . .

So, it was after 3 AM, and I did need sleep, since I had been up since 7 AM the day before.  Bob had his room at GG and I went up to my suite.  He could have stayed in the second bedroom in the suite, but all of his stuff was in his room, plus he had to check out the next day anyway, and we were sharing my room on Sat, but now he couldn't put his stuff in my room, since the current room wouldn't be my room for the rest of the trip.

Anniversary stay at Hard Rock Atlantic City - September 2018

We were just here in August, and now we are back in September.  I got two free nights as part of status matching from my Caesars Diamond card, so I booked our anniversary night.  I inquired about a suite upgrade at check in, but was told none were available.  I did ask "my host" when we came in August, but I didn't feel like I played enough to ask him for another upgrade.  We got a room in the North Tower (the old Chairman Tower), and you can see pictures of this room here.  We did not have much of a view, but the rooms look generally the same as I remembered them when it was Trump Taj Mahal.

For lunch on Sat, we went to Asian Fusion, another one of the restaurants on the way to the parking garage.  It is very similar to Panda Express, the restaurant that occupied that space when it was Trump Taj Mahal.

We spent a little time at the pool.  They remodeled it a bit, took out the old middle eastern murals and put in rock type sayings.  There was some couch seating, as well as the standard chairs and loungers.  The pool was a bit chilly, I recall it being a bit warmer before.  They still have not installed any hot tubs.  The old ones when it was Trump Taj Mahal were outside, but they had been removed for many years before they closed.

After the swim, we headed to Golden Nugget, to have our anniversary dinner at Grotto.  My wife liked this place because they had family style offerings, but they had removed them last year, and they never came back.  Still, we managed to find things we liked, and we had comps to use, so it worked out fine.

Sunday, of course, meant going to Capriccio and the Sunday Brunch.  We had a nice anniversary cake from Jorge, and the food was excellent, as always.

Gambling wasn't great, but I'm getting Sun-Fri room offers, with the occasional Sat, so hopefully there will be more trips to Hard Rock in the future.

First stay at the new Hard Rock Atlantic City - August 2018.

Yes, not so new now, and not really brand new when we stayed in August for my wife's birthday.  I played a fair amount at the Trump Taj Mahal, I was getting comped rooms any day, but I received a one night offer for having a Caesars Diamond card, and I was able to get an additional night through a host, as well as a suite upgrade.

We got there after midnight on a Friday, and I know comped room types are not guaranteed (even the host said he couldn't guarantee one), but when I checked in, the clerk told me that my suite was reserved.  Yay!

I had stayed in the end of the hall suite a few times when it was Trump Taj Mahal, so I was interested in seeing the renovations.  You can click on this link to see photos of the room.  It was nice and spacious.  I was disappointed that they took out the jacuzzi tub and the wet bar, but the dining table and large sitting area were nice, as is the half bath.

It was a bit stormy when we got up, we could see the clouds rolling in:

For lunch, we just went to one of the places on the way towards the parking garage, Burgers & Hops.  It was a decent burger, but quite pricey.

We took a walk around the property, ran into a friend outside of Sugar Factory, and walked over to Showboat to see how it is looking.  Still a bit bleak, but they do have a glow golf course as well as an arcade.  Still lots of empty space where the casino was.

Another thing we got for the status match was two free buffets.  I'm sure many people got this, as when we went there around 6:45 PM, there was quite a long line.  When we finally got seated, there was quite a line to get food.  The stations are not laid out very well, and it is hard to get around to pass a station you do not want to get to one you do want.  Although I didn't think there was a large variety, there was enough that made it interesting.

There was enough turnover that the dim sum items were not hard or dried out, and the prime rib was quite tasty.

The pool was open until 10 PM, unusually late for a casino/hotel, but unfortunately, we did not have enough time to enjoy it.

Sunday morning we checked out and headed over to Resorts for the Sunday Brunch at Capriccio.  It is always outstanding, although a bit pricey for around $50.  But the shrimp, crab claws, and beef can't be beat!  Plus bottomless mimosas and finishing with a cappuccino.  I let Jorge, the manager, know it was Cath's birthday, and they decorated a strawberry shortcake for us.  We've been going here for years, and we come here every chance we can.

As far as Hard Rock, the property looks nice.  Everywhere we went, though, it was blasting hot.  The casino floor, the hotel hallways, the room, it was hot everywhere.  We obviously won't be getting a suite every time we stay, but we saw the "regular" room in the South Tower and it was nice.  Hopefully I'll get regular offers to come back.

2018 running, well, walking mostly. . .

Continuing on the "running" theme, although it seems I never wrote about it last year, I did the Wildwood 5k and 8k in April this year.  I also capped it with the Atlantic City 10k in October.

2018 catch up

Yeah, I have not posted anything since my Las Vegas trip in January (okay, I just posted about my Frontier flight), so I guess I should write about things this year.

First thing is that I started a new job in July!  After a year and a half, I finally landed a job with BDO, another professional services firm, although quite a bit smaller than EY.  I work in the transfer pricing division, which is totally different from the business tax compliance work I was doing before.  Much of my work still ties with tax returns, so I have similar deadlines, but I am no longer working with tax returns for the most part.  A majority of my work is similar to what I was doing with EY, project coordination (tracking deliverables, billing and receiving, research, etc).  I am enjoying my time there and my coworkers are really nice.

Yay, work!

Oh, and the Washington Capitals won the Stanley Cup!  I was watching it at Buffalo Wild Wings in Fairfax with my friends Chris and Caryn.  Caryn and I were at MCI Center in 1998 when the Red Wings swept out the Capitals.  We got to see the Cup on the ice, and although we didn't get to see it in person, we got to enjoy the moment together.  Our family braved the hot weather to get to the parade and rally (well, the rally part, we camped out there with my friend Joe, but missed parade part).  We also braved the heat to try to get our photo with the Cup at Kettler, but after waiting for around six hours in the heat in the parking garage, when we were about 12 people away, they whisked the Cup away!  They gave us tickets which they said would let us know of future Cup photo opportunities, but to date, I haven't heard anything further regarding that.  Fortunately, we were able to get our photos at the Hershey Bears game later that year.

Celebrating at Buffalo Wild Wings!

Joe and I sweating it out on The Mall.

The whole family was there.

Ovi and the Cup!

Yay, parades!

We were told if we got to the pillar on the right, we'd be "guaranteed" to get a photo.

That was as close as we got to getting our photo taken.
Hey, it's Capitals' arena announcer Wes Johnson!
Tessandra got to try on the Championship Ring!

The Prince of Wales Trophy.
The Rocket Richard Trophy
The Conn Smythe Trophy!

The actual playoff MVP!
Ovi's name on it!

And his Championship Ring!
The keepers of the. . . monkey?

It was great talking hockey with these guys!

Tessandra with Phil and the other guy (unfortunately I didn't get his name!)

Worth the wait!

Finally!
